GUNNISON, Colo. – Colorado Mesa qualified five wrestlers for the NCAA National Tournament on Saturday at the NCAA Super Region Four Championships in Mountaineer Fieldhouse.
 
Daniel Salazar won the 141 pound title defeating Keith Surber of Nebraska-Kearney 7-2. After getting taken down early in the match, Salazar rebounded with a takedown and rode Surber for a match total around 2:30. This will be the second trip to the National Tournament for Salazar.
 
Drew Schumann rebounded to place third at 149 pounds. Schumann received a forfeit in the consolation semifinal after an injury and then defeated Brad Little of Fort Hays State 7-5 to take third. This will be Schumann's second straight trip also.
 
Nick Swanson placed fourth at 165 pounds but had to wrestle an extra match for a true fourth place. Swanson defeated Chance Helmick of Chadron State by pin then fell late to Simon Fraser's Tyler Mclean 5-4 in the third-place match. He rebounded for a 3-1 win over Western State's Travis Bradford to claim fourth. This is Swanson's first NCAA appearance.
 
Senior Zak Slotten will make his first NCAA appearance after placing third at 184 pounds. After defeating Western State's Brandon Supernaw 3-1, Slotten defeated Zach Stodden of Nebraska-Kearney 3-2 to claim third.
 
Marcus Haughian is the Mavericks fifth National Qualifier after placing fourth at 197 pounds. Haughian defeated Cash Drylie of Fort Hays State 10-3 to move into the third-fourth matchup then fell to Paul Head of Cal Baptist 11-7.
 
Colorado Mesa placed fourth as a team with 82.5 points in the 14 team field. Nebraska-Kearney won the region title with 145.5 points followed by Cal Baptist and Western State Colorado.
 
The NCAA National Championships will begin on March 11 in Sioux Falls, S.D.
