LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Colorado Mesa University men's basketball team had four players score in double figures in a 90-78 loss at New Mexico Highlands Saturday (Dec. 17).
The Mavericks got behind early after the Cowboys opened the game on an 8-0 run and the lead would quickly grow to double digits just over four minutes in.
Mesa used an 8-0 run midway through the first half to cut the lead to six, 29-23.
CJ Davis drained a pair of 3-pointers late in the first half, but the Mavericks would trail 42-33 at the half.
NMHU shot 60-percent (18-30) compared to 40-percent (12-30) by CMU.
Highland's lead hovered near double digits for the majority of the second half.
CJ Davis and
Connor Nichols each made 3-pointers and
James Sylvester added a jumper to bring the Mavericks within six, 84-78.
Highlands sealed the win with six straight free throws.
For the second straight game Mesa set a season-high from the line shooting 83-percent (10-12).
Eimer Lopez paced the Mavericks with 18 points, and
Kabir West added 17.
Connor Nichols and
CJ Davis finished with 13 and 12.
NMHU finished with a 33-21 edge on the glass.
The Cowboys shot 59-percent (34-57) from the field and held the Mavericks to 41-percent (28-67).
Ron Lawton led Highlands with 27 points, and Ranko Puseljic chipped in 16.
Colorado Mesa (2-10, 1-5) will play at MSU Denver Dec. 30. Â
