DENVER – The Colorado Mesa University men's basketball team had five players score in double figures in a 98-89 loss at MSU Denver Friday (Dec. 30).
CJ Davis came off the bench to score a team-high 18 points.
Eimer Lopez finished with 16,
Connor Nichols 15,
James Sylvester 12 and
Nate Hawley 10.
Cameron Williams led MSUD with a game-high 37 points, with Sunday Dech adding 24 and Peter Moller 20.
The two teams battled for most of the first half trading the lead six times. The Roadrunners used an 8-0 run with five minutes left in the first half to take a double digit lead 41-31 and led 51-39 at the half.
Metro shot 58-percent (19-31) from the field and 53-percent (8-15) from deep in the first. Mesa shot 46-percent (13-28) from the field and 33-percent (3-9) from behind the arc.
The Roadrunners lead grew to as many as 18 points, but the Mavericks would not go away quietly.
Brandon Hoffer made a lay-up with under a minute left to cut the deficit to just six, 90-84.
The Roadrunners would out-score the Mavericks 6-1 in the final minute with the lone Maverick point coming on a free throw off a technical foul by Metro.
CMU outscored MSUD 50-47 in the second half.
Mesa led 40-30 in rebounds and scored 21 points off 19 Metro turnovers. CMU turned the ball over 10 times.
Metro led 45-35 in rebounds and led 24-15 in second chance points.
