PUEBLO, COLO. – A trio of Colorado Mesa University men's basketball players scored in double figures but it wasn't enough as CSU-Pueblo defeated the Mavericks 85-75 Friday (Dec. 16).
Nate Hawley drained four 3-pointers to lead the Mavericks with a game-high 18 points.
James Sylvester finished with 14 points, including eight from the line, and
Kabir West chipped in 12 points in his first appearance of the season.
The Mavericks opened the game shooting 34-percent (12-35) over the first 20 minutes compared to 42-percent (12-28) by the Pack to trail by 38-33 at the break.
Pueblo's lead grew to double digits early in the second half and eventually expanded to as many as 20 with 3:41 remaining. The Mavericks responded with a 14-4 run to pull the score to 82-72 with under a minute remaining, but it was too little too late.
Mesa's offense improved in the second half shooting 40-percent (11-27) but unfortunately so did Pueblo's (16-35, 45-percent).
Free throw shooting was a bright spot for the Mavericks who have struggled this season at the line. The Mavs shot a season-high 78-percent (21-27).
Pueblo had a quartet of players score in double figures with Will Newman and Mark Williams each finishing with 17.
The Pack led 36-18 in points in the paint and 19-8 in second chance points.
Mesa was out-rebounded 46-37.
Colorado Mesa (2-9, 1-4) will play at New Mexico Highlands Saturday (Dec. 16).
