Mavericks Earn First Win of the Season

GUNNISON, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa men's basketball team earned their first win of the season on Friday evening with a 120-33 win over Dine College at the Comfort Inn Classic hosted by Western State Colorado in Paul Wright Gym.

The last time the Mavericks won by 50 or more points was last season when they defeated Webber International 105-51 in the Holiday Inn & Suites – Airport Thanksgiving Classic on November 27, 2015.

Colorado Mesa shot an astounding 71.7 percent (43-for-60) from the field including 43.8 percent (7-for-16) from beyond the arc. The field goal percentage is the highest for the Mavericks since at least 2002.

DJ Wells led all scorers with a career-high 22 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Wells was a perfect 10-for-10 from the field and went 2-for-3 from the charity stripe.

The Mavericks raced out to a 67-22 halftime score and never looked back. They forced 11 Warrior turnovers in the first half that led to 17 points.

CMU used a distinct size advantage to take command of the game where they scored 65 points in the paint and outrebounded Dine 50-25. Trent Clay led all rebounders with a career-high nine boards.

Clay also added a career-high 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field and a pair of three-point baskets.

Freshman Ludvig Saldh also had a career-high with 17 points while fellow freshman Ridge Droskin saw his first action in a Maverick uniform and chipped in six points and pulled down four rebounds.

Every player that played for Colorado Mesa scored in the game.

The Mavericks will be back in action tomorrow night to close out the tournament with a game against Wayland Baptist at 5pm.
