CJ Davis scored a game-high 23 points for the Colorado Mesa University men's basketball team but it wasn't enough as it fell 71-66 to St. Edward's in the RMAC vs. Heartland Conference Shootout Saturday (Nov. 12).
Connor Nichols also finished in double figures for the Mavericks scoring 13 points.
Both teams struggled offensively over the first half. CMU shot 38-percent (12-31) to SEU's 33-percent (14-42), but the Hilltoppers led 35-31 at the break.
The Mavericks improved in the second half shooting 43-percent (13-30) and held the Hillstoppers to 39-percent (13-33), but SEU outscored CMU 36-35 over the final 20 minutes.
St. Ed's finished with a 44-30 edge in rebounds, including a 16-4 lead on the offensive glass.
St. Ed's shot 73-percent (11-15) from the line, while Mesa shot 42-percent (6-14).
Ethan Gilbert led three SEU players in double figures with 19 points.
Colorado Mesa (0-2) will face Dine College Friday (Nov. 18) in Gunnison, Colo.
