GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – They looked a little tired after coming home early Sunday morning from South Dakota, but the Colorado Mesa volleyball team was able to garner enough energy to defeat the visiting Western State Colorado Mountaineers 3-1 on Tuesday evening in Brownson Arena.
The Mavericks (17-4, 11-2 RMAC) hit .286 and went on to win 27-25 to take the first set. Western State had a pair of leads at 23-20 and 24-21 before
Kricket Adleman rattled off four straight points off her serve to take command in the set.
Western State (11-10, 7-6 RMAC) completely dominated the second set behind a .357 hitting percentage, taking the set 25-12. The Mavericks hit .000 and committed 10 total errors in the second set alone.
Colorado Mesa returned after the break and won the third set 25-20 behind three team blocks and returned the favor, limiting the Mountaineers to a .000 hitting percentage. The Mavericks trailed 18-13 in the set but once again Adleman served seven straight points to put the Mavericks ahead in the set for good.
Sophomore Mackenzie Edwards took over in the fourth set delivering seven kills and hit .429 to give the Mavericks the 25-22 edge. Edwards added six digs in the set ad committed just one hitting error.
Edwards finished the night with 18 kills and completed the double-double with 14 digs. She added an ace and was in on one block.
Senior
Gabriela Dias tied Edwards with 18 kills and hit just a tick better at .297.
Setter
Ali Svorinic averaged 13 assists per set on the evening finishing with 52 total assists while libero
Taylor Woods dug out 27 balls (6.75/set).
The Mavericks will head out on the road for a match on Friday against Westminster in Salt Lake City.
