SPEARFISH, S.D. – It took five sets but the Black Hills State Yellowjackets upset #24 Colorado Mesa 3-2 on Friday evening in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference volleyball match. The Mavericks fall to 15-4 and 9-2 in the RMAC while Black Hills improves to 6-13, 4-7 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Colorado Mesa falls to 0-4 on the season when they drop the first set as they fell 25-17 in the match opener. The Mavericks hit just .022 in the set and were led by the four kills of
Gabriela Dias.
The Mavericks rebounded to take the second and third sets 25-20 and 25-18 respectively. They hit .310 and .257 in those sets. Mackenzie Edwards had 11 kills in the two sets.
CMU dropped the fourth set 25-16 and the match decider 15-11.
Edwards tried keeping the Mavericks in the match, finishing with a match-high 17 kills and accounted for 17.5 total points.
Dias and freshman
Katie Scherr were the only other Mavericks in double-digit kills with 13 and 10.
The Mavericks are set to do battle with the South Dakota Mines Hardrockers tomorrow evening at 7pm in Rapid City.
