Ryan Stephan scored a career-high 42 points to lead the Colorado Mesa University men's basketball to an 85-72 win at Chadron State Saturday (Jan. 23).
Stephan's 42 points was three points shy of the school record of 45 set by Jon Baskin against Chadron State on Jan. 31, 1991. Stephan shot 15-of-23 from the field and 11-of-14 from the line. He grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked two shots.
CJ Davis and
Eimer Lopez each had 11 points for CMU.
The Eagles took an early 11-2 lead thanks to a trio of 3-pointers.
Chadron would lead until 4:37 of the first half when
CJ Davis drained a 3-pointer to tie the game at 29.
Ryan Stephan would follow up with the final 13 points of the half for CMU to give Mesa a 42-35 lead at the break.
Mesa shot 52-percent in the first and held Chadron to 43-percent.
The CMU lead ballooned to 17 points five and a half minutes into the second, but Chadron cut the lead to single digits midway through the second.
CSC pulled within four points, 73-69, with 5:18 remaining, but CMU closed the game on a 12-3 run for the win.
Mesa shot 54-percent (30-55) for the game and held Chadron to 40-percent (27-68).
The Eagles were able to stay with the Mavs thanks to 10 3-pointers. CMU finished with five.
CMU led for nearly 24 minutes while Chadron led for 15.
Warren Gordon led CSC with 16 points.
Colorado Mesa (13-6, 9-4) will host CSU-Pueblo Jan. 29th.Â
