Football Opens With Win

ST. GEORGE, UTAH – The Colorado Mesa University football team racked up 582 yards of total offense in a 43-3 win at Dixie State Saturday (Sept. 5). The Mavs have won their last three season openers.

Sophomore Jonathon Beverly led the Mavericks rushing for 14.9 yards per carry and 224 yards, including a long of 60 yards.

The Mavericks also enjoyed strong play from a pair of quarterbacks in Sean Rubalcaba and Aric Kaiser. Rubalcaba started the game completing 7-of-11 passes for 86 yards throwing one touchdown and rushing for another. Kaiser completed 9-of-15 passes for 133 yards.

For all the offense that the CMU displayed, it would be the defense that put the Mavericks on the board first. Tom Saager intercepted a Dixie pass and returned it 38-yards for a touchdown at 8:33 of the first quarter.

CMU's next scoring drive would start on the Dixie 12-yard line after the Red Storm were forced to fall on the ball after a high snap on a punt. DJ Hubbard rushed for all 12 yards on the two-play drive that culminated in a three-yard touchdown.

The Maverick lead grew to 28 points in the second quarter with a pair of touchdowns from Sean Rubalcaba. Rubalcaba found Marcus Hines for a 61-yard touchdown strike that capped a five play, 67 yard drive. Rubalcaba would scamper 45 yards to the end zone a little over two minutes later.

Ryan Sheehan would add two field goals from 33 and 25 yards for CMU.

Dixie would get on the board just before halftime with a 32-yard field goal.

The third quarter featured a touchdown from Jonathon Beverly, and a third field goal from the foot of Ryan Sheehan.

CMU tallied 363 of its 582 yards in the game on the ground and averaged 8.2 yards per play.

Dustin Rivas averaged 17 yards on four punt returns for CMU.

The Mavericks dominated the time of possession 33:39 to 26:21, including 12:32 of the 15 minutes in the third quarter.

The CMU defense held DSU to 287 yards of total offense.

Jeremy Aquino led the Mavs with 8.5 tackles, including eight solo.

Colorado Mesa (1-0) will host Midwestern State (1-0) for its home opener Sept. 12th at 7 pm.
