Volleyball Team Off to Slow Start

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. – The No. 10 Colorado Mesa University volleyball team opened the 2015 season with a pair of losses Friday (Sept. 4). CMU opened with a 3-0 loss to UC San Diego and ended the day with a 3-1 loss to Point Loma.

"It was a tough day," said head coach Dave Fleming. "We played well in short spurts, but did not respond well when the other teams played well. I feel we are as talented as the teams we played today, but we have to learn to play as a team."

CMU dropped a tough first set loss to UCSD 25-23. The Mavericks hit .150 with 12 kills on 40 attempts with six errors.

The Maverick offense struggled in set two hitting -.250 while the Tritons hit a match-high .588.

CMU's offense got back in the groove in set three hitting a team-high .233 but dropping the set 25-21.

Colorado Mesa collected its first set win of the season taking the opener against Point Loma in extra points 26-24. CMU hit a team-high .225 in the set.

The Mavs dropped the next three sets (25-10, 25-15, 25-18) after failing to record a positive attack percentage in any of the remaining sets.

Caitie Breaux tallied a double-double for the Mavs with 10 kills and 11 digs. Hattie Gianinetti also added 10 kills.

Kricket Adleman finished with a team-high 19 digs, and Ali Svorinic finished with 24 assists.

CMU (0-2) will wrap-up the weekend with matches against San Francisco State and Concordia (CA) Saturday (Sept. 4).
