GRAND JUNCTION, COLO. – The Colorado Mesa University volleyball team gave the more than 1,000 fans in attendance what they came for defeating Chadron State 3-0 in the Mavericks home opener Friday (Sept. 25).
Erin Perez led all players with 17 kills for the Mavericks and hit. 229.
Audrey Steinkirchner was the other Maverick in double figures tallying 10 kills.
Ali Svorinic recorded 33 assists.
Caitie Breaux and
Taylor Woods combined for 29 digs.
Chadron State out-hit Colorado Mesa for the match, .179 to .165, but the Mavericks would lead in digs (52-44) and aces (7-1).
The two teams battled early in the first set before
Naomi Pinnecoose recorded three straight service aces to give CMU a 23-20 lead. The Mavs would go on to win the set 25-22.
The Eagles out-hit the Mavericks .189 to .150 in the second but CMU would win the set 25-22.
Naomi Pinnescoose's strong serving paid dividends once again late in the third set extending the Mavs lead to 23-15.
The Eagles would make a run late in the set due to six straight errors by the Mavericks.
The Mavericks would earn the win with a kill from
Erin Perez and a service ace by Chadron to earn the win.
Colorado Mesa (5-8, 3-1) will host Regis Saturday (Sept. 26) at 6 pm. The Rangers defeated the Mavericks earlier this season 3-1.
