GRAND JUNCTION, COLO. – The Colorado Mesa University football team dominated most sides of the ball in a 55-16 win over Adam State to open RMAC play Saturday (Sept. 19).
The 55 points was the most scored by the Mavericks since Sept. 10, 2011 when they scored 52 at Dixie State.
The CMU defense held ASU to 296 total yards with only 32 yards rushing. The defense tallied four interceptions and one fumble. It also tallied five sacks and 11 tackles for a loss of 73 yards.
The Mavs jumped out to a an early 10-0 lead compliments of a 28-yard field goal from
Ryan Sheehan and a six-yard touchdown run from
DJ Hubbard.
Adams would get on the board with a field goal of its own with a 27-yarder at the end of the first.
The Mavericks would go on to rattle off five straight touchdowns over the next two quarters.
Three of the touchdowns came from the arm of
Sean Rubalcaba who completed 13-of-19 passes for 270 yards.
Dustin Rivas returned a punt 85 yards for a score, and
Jonathon Beverly rushed for the other. Rivas tallied 149 yards on just three returns.
The Grizzlies scored their lone touchdown on a hook and ladder play near the end of the third.
The touchdown was the first allowed by the CMU defense in more than 10 straight quarters.
Beverly found the end zone for the second time on an eight-yard run to complete the scoring for CMU. Beverly finished with 113 yards on 21 carries for a 5.4 yard average.
Adams completed the scoring with a two-yard rush with 7:35 left in the fourth.
Mesa had seven different players catch a pass.
Derek Vander Velde caught a team-high four passes for 64 yards and one score.
Virnel Moon finished with a team-high 97 yards on three catches, including a 55-yard score.
 The Mavs were automatic in the redzone scoring on all six trips, with five touchdowns.
Colorado Mesa (2-1, 1-0) will play at Chadron State (1-2, 0-1) Sept. 26.Â
