Hattie Gianinetti hit a team-high .471 with 10 kills to lead the Colorado Mesa University volleyball team to a 3-2 win at MSU Denver Friday (Sept. 18).
Gianinetti was one of four Mavericks to tally 10 or more kills in the match.
Audrey Steinkirchner finished with a match-high 13 kills and hit .259.
Caitie Breaux tallied a double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs.
Abby Ney tallied 10 kills and collected two of the team's three service aces.
"It feels good to be on the winning side of things again," said head coach
Dave Fleming. "The team fought hard and stepped up when we needed it most. Audrey came up with some huge blocks and kills down the stretch."
Mesa dominated the first set offensively and defensively started the match on an 8-2 run. The Mavs hit a team-high .333 in the set with 16 kills while holding the Roadrunners to a .074 attack percentage and just six kills to win 25-17.
Metro turned the tables in the second set limiting Mesa to a team-low .083 offensively to win 25-17.
The home team momentum continued for Metro as they hit a match-high .382. CMU hit .216 in the third set but also tallied seven errors falling 25-20.
Both teams sputtered offensively in the fourth set recording nine errors a piece. The Mavs hit .152 to .030 for the Roadrunners to win the set 25-20 and force a fifth set.
The Mavericks dominated the final set hitting .227 with five kills and zero errors. The CMU defense also did its part holding MSUD to -.111 with six kills and nine errors. Metro would tally back-to-back points in the set just once as Mesa won 15-6.
CMU hit .196 for the match with 59 kills compared to .130 and 49 kills for MSUD. Mesa also held a 54-46 edge in assists.
Ali Svorinic finished with 30 assists, and
Hana Peterman had 19.
Taylor Woods dug a team-high 19 balls, and
Erin Perez had 13.
MSU Denver was led by three players with eight kills.
CMU (3-6, 1-0) will play at UCCS Saturday.
