KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Colorado Mesa claimed a 14-9 win over the Rockhurst Hawks on Sunday morning to claim the 2015 Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Championship. It is the second time the Mavericks won the title with their last championship coming in 2012.
After playing to a 2-1 first period, Colorado Mesa took control of the match with a 6-3 period to take an 8-4 halftime lead.
Rockhurst cut the lead to two three separate times in the half but could never get any closer.
David Solomon had a huge day for the Mavericks, tallying five goals and an assist in the match. Solomon had a stretch in the fourth quarter where he scored three straight goals in a span of a little over three minutes.
Calen Ketcham added two goals and
Ryan Jones and
Michael Beimford each had a goal and an assist.
Austin Cromwell picked up seven groundballs and went 10-for-23 on his faceoff opportunities.
Zach Weaver earned his seventh win of the season in net. He had 10 saves while facing 45 shots.
The Mavericks improve to 6-3 on the season and remain a perfect 6-0 in WILA action.
Colorado Mesa will return home to take on the Adams State Grizzlies on April 17 at 7pm at Walker Field.
