Box Score 2 ALAMOSA, Colo. – Top ranked Colorado Mesa split a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon with the Adams State Grizzlies. The Mavericks record moves to 26-3 on the season and 18-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
In game one, Colorado Mesa trailed 5-0 after three innings of play but rattled off 10 unanswered runs in a 10-5 win over the Grizzlies.
Ryan Reno earned the win in the game to improve to 8-0 on the season, to stay atop the NCAA Div. II rankings in wins. Reno went the distance and allowed five runs on seven hits, walked one and struck out one.
In the third, Reno gave up a grand slam which led to the five run third inning.
Austin Wallingford got the comeback started with a two-run homer in the top of the fourth.
The Mavericks added single runs in the fifth and the sixth and then exploded for a sixth run seventh inning. The inning was highlighted by a two-run double by
PJ Gonzalez.
Wallingford finished the game 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs, three runs scored and three runs driven in.
Bligh Madris finished with three hits as well.
In game two, the Mavericks once again found themselves in a hole, trailing by scores of 4-1 and 7-3 but couldn't muster a big enough comeback and fell 7-4 to the Grizzlies.
The loss snaps the Mavericks 21-game winning streak that dated back to February 20.
Trailing 7-4 in the seventh, the Mavericks had the tying run at the plate with one out but grounded into a double play which ended the game.
Wallingford hit his fourth home run of the series in the game and finished the game 3-for-3 with two runs scored.
Nick Cardinale took the loss on the mound and drops to 3-1 on the season.
The two teams will conclude the series tomorrow with a nine-inning game at 12pm.
