ROME, Ga. – The trio of
David Solomon,
Michael Beimford, and Griffen Perkiel each scored two goals in the Mavericks 9-7 win over the Shorter Hawks on Wednesday evening at Ben Brady Field. The Mavericks improved to 4-1 on the season and 4-0 in NCAA South Region games.
The match was a back-and-forth affair with neither team gaining a significant advantage throughout the first three periods. The two teams were tied 4-4 at the halftime break.
David Solomon's goal with 12:52 left in the fourth period gave the Mavericks the lead for good.
Beimford, Solomon, and Perkiel each scored a goal in each half of play to lead the Colorado Mesa attack.
The Mavericks man-down defense killed three penalties in the game allowing no goals and they were able to kill a three minute penalty that stretched from the end of the first period to the first minute of the second period of play.
Zach Weaver led the Colorado Mesa defense in goal making seven saves in the match. Weaver picked up two groundballs and faced 19 shots.
Austin Cromwell won 9-of-18 faceoffs and picked up three groundballs.
The Mavericks faced adversity even before the match started as they faced travel problems flying into Atlanta.
Colorado Mesa will take on No. 2 ranked and last season's NCAA Div. II National Champion Limestone on Friday in Gaffney, S.C.
