Box Score 2 GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – No. 3 Colorado Mesa bared the cold and snowy conditions to pick up a doubleheader sweep of the Colorado Christian Cougars at Suplizio Field on Friday to open up RMAC play.
In game one,
Joey Samuels hit a walk off single to give the Mavericks a 4-3 victory over the Cougars. Samuels entered the game in the top of the sixth inning as a defensive replacement but came through in the ninth, driving in
PJ Gonzalez.
Samuels finished the game 1-for-2.
Alex Fife and
Austin Wallingford each finished the game with two hits while
Kyle Serrano belted his first homerun of the season in the bottom of the sixth.
Tyler Ehlers picked up the win in relief of starter
Matt Allen. Ehlers pitched the final three innings and allowed just two hits, walked one and struck out two.
In the nightcap,
Ryan Reno pitched the complete game in a 6-2 victory for Colorado Mesa. Reno (4-0) allowed two runs (none earned) on five hits, walked no one and struck out two while throwing 103 pitches.
Alex Fife finished his day off with three more hits that gave him five on the day. He also drove in three and scored a run.
Five Mavericks finished the second game with multiple hits.
Colorado Mesa improved to 10-2 on the season while the Cougars fell to 5-5.
The Mavericks and Cougars will play another doubleheader tomorrow at 12pm at Suplizio Field.
