SILVER CITY, N.M. –
Derek Biale dished out a school record 16 assists for the Colorado Mesa University men's basketball team in a 92-66 win at Western New Mexico Saturday (Feb. 14).
Biale shattered the old record of nine held by three players, most recently by Jase Herl in 2009.
The Mavericks led from start to finish shooting 64-percent (18-28) in the first half to lead 47-29.
The CMU defense did its part as well holding the Mustangs to 35-percent (11-31) from the floor in the first half.
Three pointers were a bright spot once again for the Mavs as they drained 15 to the Mustangs five.
Mesa dominated the glass outrebounding Western 40-26.
Ryan Stephan finished with a game-high 27 points and 13 rebounds, two shy of his season and career highs, for the Mavericks.
Landon Vermeer, who scored a career-high 25 points last night at Highlands, finished with 22.
Julian Vasquez was the third Maverick in double figures with 10.
Terrez Scott led the Mustangs with 18 points.
CMU made 7-of-8 free throws and WNMU was 13-of-19 from the line.
CMU (17-7, 12-6) will play Western State in Gunnison Feb. 21.Â
