GOLDEN, COLO. – The Colorado Mesa University men's basketball team needed overtime and a season-high 36 points from
Ryan Stephan to defeat No. 24 Colorado School of Mines Friday (Dec. 18).
The win was the first for CMU in RMAC play this season and they improve to 5-5 overall.
Mines would lead from the start and held a 43-30 lead at halftime after shooting 52-percent (13-25) over the first 20 minutes. CMU shot 43-percent (9-21) without a 3-pointer while CSM had eight.
The Orediggers led by 14 points with seven minutes remaining before the Mavericks mounted their comeback closing regulation with a 21-8 run.
Colorado Mines would score just one field goal at 3:38, its only field goal over the final seven minutes.
Ryan Stephan would lead the charge for CMU. The senior scored 16 of the team's final 21 points including the team's final nine points from behind the arc to tie the game and force overtime. Stephan also finished with a game-high 11 rebounds.
Mines had a shot at the buzzer to win in regulation but missed.
CMU held CSM to 8-of-21 (38-percent) from the field in the second while shooting 17-of-37 (46-percent).
Mesa was nearly automatic in overtime shooting 6-of-7 with its lone miss coming from deep.
Eimer Lopez led the scoring for the Mavs scoring six of the team's 15 points in the extra period.
Kabir West was the third CMU player to finish in double figures with 10 points.
CMU dominated the paint out-scoring CSM 50-16. CMU's starting line-up accounted for 77 of the team's 89 points.
Mesa out-rebounded Mines 38-28, but Mines led in free throws made 24-19.
Gokul Natesan led Mines with a game-high 38 points.
Colorado Mesa will play at Colorado Christian Saturday (Dec. 19).Â
