CJ Davis drained seven 3-pointers to finish with a career-high 26 points for Colorado Mesa University in a 91-82 win at Colorado Christian Saturday (Dec. 19).
The Mavericks shot the ball well all night including 50-percent (30-59) from the field and 48-percent (13-27) from deep.
The CMU defense limited CCU to 42-percent (27-64) from the field and 33-percent (10-30) from behind the arc.
CMU built an early 15 point lead, 17-2, five minutes into the game behind a trio of 3-pointers.
The Mavs held the Cougars to single digits until 11:44 of the first, but the Mavs answered with a pair of three's to build their lead to 22 points, 34-12.
Mesa's lead grew to as many as 23 points in the first before Christian cut it to 16 at half, 51-35.
Wayne McCullough, who finished with a game-high 27 points, drained back-to-back three-pointers for the Cougars as the Maverick's lead shrunk to just six, 73-67, with five minutes remaining.
CJ Davis poured in two more baskets from deep to extend the CMU lead to 12, 79-67.
Mesa shot 64-percent (18-28) from the line for the game, but made 11-of-17 free throws over the final 2:47 to earn the win.
Ryan Stephan posted 24 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double for CMU, and
Eimer Lopez contributed 13 points, six rebounds and a career-high eight rebounds.
Colorado Mesa (6-5, 2-3) will be off until New Year's Day when it hosts South Dakota Mines. Fans can earn free admission into both games on Jan. 1-2 with a non-perishable food donation.Â
