Bench Play Leads Mavericks to Win

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 23 Colorado Mesa Mavericks received a huge effort from their bench in a 72-65 win over the UCCS Mountain Lions on Friday evening in Brownson Arena in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference home opener.

Shyanne Halalilo and Nicole Archambeau combined for 28 of the Mavericks 32 points off the bench tonight.

Halalilo finished with a career-high 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field. She shot 2-of-5 from the three-point stripe including one that came with 46 seconds left to give the Mavericks a nine point lead at 72-63.

Archambeau had a team-high 16 points and eight rebounds with three coming on the offensive end. She was also given the tough opportunity of guarding RMAC Offensive Player of the Week Brittany Hernandez.

Hernandez finished with 22 points and seven rebounds which is what she averaged coming into the contest. She was held scoreless in the first quarter before picking up nine points before halftime.

Defensively, Colorado Mesa limited UCCS to just one made three-point basket in the game (1-for-17). The Mountain Lions entered the contest making nearly nine three-pointers a game.

Colorado Mesa's leading scorer Bryanna Adams was limited to just eight points and was in foul trouble all game. Adams fouled out with 7:20 to go in the game.

At halftime, the Mavericks and Mountain Lions were tied at 35-35. It was the first time this season the Mavericks did not lead at halftime.

The Mavericks will take on the MSU Denver Roadrunners tomorrow evening at 5:30pm in Brownson Arena. The Roadrunners fell to Westminster 55-45 in the first game of their two-game road trip.
