LARAMIE, Wyo. – Colorado Mesa had four place in the top four at the University of Wyoming Cowboy Open on Saturday.
At 165 pounds,
Jessie Hoffschneider placed third in the elite division, designed for upperclassmen. Hoffschneider made it all the way to the semifinals before dropping a 3-1 decision to Air Force's Alexandre Lopouchanski. He rebounded with an 8-4 win over Wyoming's Kyle Pope to go to the third-place match where he defeated Chaz Polson of Wyoming 7-3.
Daniel Salazar placed fourth at 141 pounds in the elite division. Salazar, like Hoffschneider, made it all the way to the semifinals before falling to Bryce Meredith of Wyoming. In the consolation semifinals, he defeated David Walker of Air Force 9-1 before forfeiting his match for third due to injury.
Jace Abbott was crowned champion of the 141 pound amateur division of the tournament. Abbott defeated JD Rader of Nebraska-Kearney in the championship bout 13-2. He defeated Northern Colorado's Sean Cannon in the semifinals by way of pin in 3:58.
In the 157 pound bracket in the amateur division,
Jason Buhr placed third after falling in the quarterfinals. Buhr worked his way back through the consolation bracket and earned a major decision victory over Josh Mossing of Air Force before receiving a pair of forfeits and a default victory.
A couple of other notable wins for the Mavericks.
Nick Swanson defeated two-time NCAA qualifier Chase White of Nebraska-Kearney in the opening match of the 157 pound elite division bracket and freshman
Isaac Rider defeated Reis Humphrey of New Mexico Highlands, a 2015 NCAA National Qualifier.
The Mavericks will host the DoubleTree Open on Saturday November 14.
