PUEBLO, COLO. – Cameron and Bernard McDondle ran for a combined 267 yards and four touchdowns to lead No. 4 CSU-Pueblo to a 51-20 win over No. 16 Colorado Mesa Saturday (Nov. 7). The loss is the first for the Mavericks in RMAC play this season who fall to 8-2 overall and 7-1 in league play.
The Thunderwolves opened the scoring on a 15-yard run by AJ Thompson at 8:08 of the first quarter to cap a 10-play 95-yard drive.
Ryan Sheehan got the Mavs on the scoreboard with a 38-yard field goal at 3:14 of the first.
CMU earned excellent field possession to start its next scoring drive thanks to a blocked punt in the end zone. The Mavs would take over on the seven-yard line, but quarterback
Sean Rubalcaba would leave the game on the first play of the drive with a leg injury.
Aric Kaiser completed a seven-yard touchdown pass to
Marcus Hines on his first play under center.
With the Mavericks leading 10-7, the Thunderwolves would score nine points in a span of 18 seconds early in the second quarter. Morgan Fox tackled Kaiser in the end zone for a safety, and Cameron McDondle ran 40 yards for his first of two touchdowns in the game.
Jonathon Beverly regained the lead for CMU, 17-16, with a three-yard rush to cap a five-play 70-yard drive.
Pueblo would take a 19-17 lead into the half after a 27-yard field goal from the foot of Greg O'Donnell with 20 seconds remaining in the half.
CSUP opened the scoring in the second half with an eight-yard touchdown pass from Thompson to Zach Boyd.
Ryan Sheehan kicked a 32-yard field goal for the final CMU points of the game.
Pueblo scored 25 unaswered points to end the game.
CSUP led 463-241 in total offense and 279-105 in rushing yards.
Jonathon Beverly was the leading rusher for CMU with 88 yards on 13 carries (6.8 ypc).
Sean Rubalcaba completed both of his passes for 23 yards before he was replaced by
Aric Kaiser who completed 16-of-36 attempts for 113 yards.
Marcus Hines led Mesa in both receptions (four) and receiving yards (32).
Colorado Mesa will close out the regular season at Western State Nov. 14
th.
