GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa crowned five champions at the DoubleTree Open on Saturday in Brownson Arena. Some of the teams competing in the open include CSU-Pueblo, Western State, Wyoming and Utah Valley to name a few.
Jonathon Stelling earned the championship after earning an injury default win over Mitch Brown of Utah Valley in the final. Along the way, Stelling defeated Jesse Reed of Northern Colorado and Tyler Scott of Utah Valley.
At 141 pounds,
Daniel Salazar earned a forfeit victory over teammate
Jace Abbott in the final. Salazar earned a pair of falls on the road to the championship, including one over CSU-Pueblo's Kyle Fantin.
Jason Buhr earned maybe the biggest win of the tournament in the championship bout of 157 pounds. Buhr secured a 14-9 decision win over CSU-Pueblo's JaCobi Jones, a returning All-American from a year ago.
Jessie Hoffschneider earned his third straight placing, this time winning the championship at 165 pounds. Hoffschneider defeated Dalton Harmon of Utah Valley 9-6 in the championship bout.
At 184 pounds,
Zak Slotten picked up the championship after defeating Wyoming's Steven Allen 9-4. Slotten, who took a year off from school, earned a 10-7 decision over Ladd Bunker of Western State in the semifinals.
The Mavericks will be back in action at the UNK Holiday Inn Open in Kearney, Neb. next weekend.
