Ryan Stephan scored a game-high 33 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds in a 92-85 season-opening loss to St. Edward's Friday (Nov. 13).
CJ Davis added 14 points, including four of the team's nine three-pointers, and Eimer Lopex finished with 12.
CMU shot 50-percent (12-24) from the floor in the first half, but SEU shot 57-percent (32-56) to lead 49-35 at the break.
The Mavs would battle back in the second out-scoring the Hilltoppers 50-43. Both teams shot 46-percent from the field over the final 20 minutes.
St. Ed's led 12-9 in three-pointers, but Mesa scored 21 points off 13 turnovers by St. Ed's. SEU finished with 13 points off turnovers.
CMU dominated play in the paint outscoring SEU 40-28.
John Gramlich led four Hilltoppers in double-figures with 21 points.
CMU (0-1) will face Dallas Baptist Saturday (Nov. 13).Â
