GREELEY, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa wrestling team opened up the season at the Northern Colorado Open on Sunday. The Mavericks came away with a champion, three second-placers, and two third place finishes in the open.
Returning national qualifier senior
Daniel Salazar won the 141 pound title on Sunday defeating CSU-Pueblo's Jordan Northrup in the finals 7-6 in overtime. Salazar defeated teammate
Jace Abbott in the semifinals 6-1.
One of the Mavericks other returning national qualifiers,
Drew Schumann placed second at 149 pounds. Schumann fell to Wyoming's Branson Ashworth 4-3 in the championship match but finished his day with a tech fall and a pin along the way.
Redshirt freshman
Jason Buhr placed second at 157 pounds. Buhr fell to Northern Colorado's Eleazer De Luca in the final 18-2. In the semis, he defeated teammate
Payton Tawater 6-1.
Jessie Hoffschneider placed second at 165 pounds, falling to Northern Colorado's Kellan Torres in the championship match 4-3. Hoffschneider picked up two major decision victories along the way.
Nick Swanson placed third at 157 pounds and
Jonathon Stelling placed third at 125 pounds.
The Mavericks will be back in action next weekend when they travel to the Cowboy Open on Saturday.
