LAKEWOOD, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa University men's basketball team out-shot Colorado Christian but dropped an 81-77 decision to the Cougars Saturday (Jan. 31).
CMU shot 56-percent (30-53) and held CCU to 50-percent (26-52). Tonight was the second time this season the Mavs out-shot its opponent and lost.
Free throws also played a big part in the outcome. CCU shot 18-23 from the line, and CMU was 9-11.
The Cougars led from start to finish, with its biggest lead of 14 points coming with four minutes remaining in the first.
The Mavs closed to within nine at the break, 42-33.
CCU's lead would remain in single digits for the majority of the second half. CMU got within one point, but CCU made 7-of-8 free throws late to secure the win.
Ryan Stephan scored a game-high 32 points and eight rebounds to lead the Mavericks.
Jerry Duckworth chipped in 10 points for CMU.
Four Cougars scored in double figures led by Tyler Shields with 18.
CMU enjoyed a 20-11 edge in assists.
