The loss is the first at home for the Mavericks since Jan. 31, 2014 when it fell to Colorado School of Mines 65-48.

Julian Vasquez scored the first 10 points of the contest on his way to a game-high 23.

Neither team could create much separation until Mines went on a 7-0 run to lead 27-17 with 4:24 remaining.

CMU responded immediately with a 10-3 run to close the half trailing 30-27.

The two teams would each score 31 points in the second half with Mines shooting 52-percent from the floor (11-21) and Mesa 44-percent (11-25).

With the Mavericks down seven,
Joe Kiely drained a pair of free throws then got the ball back thanks to a turnover by the Orediggers.

Julian Vasquez made a lay-up, and a miss by Mines gave the ball to the Mavericks down three with nine seconds remaining.

Michael Melillo put up the game-tying shot that rattled around the rim but didn't fall giving the Orediggers the 61-58 win.

Joe Kiely finished with 15 points for Mesa, and Trevor Ritchie led Mines with 14 points.

Mines finished with a 38-28 edge in rebounds.

Mesa finished with an advantage in points in the paint (32-16) and points off turnovers (16-1).

The Mavericks turned the ball over a season-low four times.

This was the eighth CMU game this season that was decided by three points or less.
