Complete Game Notes vs. St. Edward's and Midwestern StateSEASON OPENERSColorado Mesa is 2-2-3 all-time in season openers. This will be the first time in four seasons that the Mavericks wont open against a school from California. Last season they opened the season with an 0-1 defeat to Cal State - Stanislaus in Nampa, Idaho. The Mavericks last opening day win came in 2010 when they defeated RMAC foe Colorado Christian 3-0 in Lakewood.
ESCOBARSAll-Region selection
Marco Escobar and his 17 points are gone. But, His twin brothers, Nestor and Kevin, are back and slated to start during the opening weekend. The Twins combined for 10 points (2g, 6a) a year ago and both are climbing in the all-time record book.
HOMETOWN HEROESColorado Mesa has three players slated to start from Grand Junction. Grand Junction High School teammates
Tim Hofer and
Sean Foster along with Central High School's
Stevie Palma.
VETERAN DEFENSEThe Mavericks will start three defenders that all have a wealth of experience. The group is led by all-region player
Blake Carlson and he will be flanked by
Oliver Querin and
Stan Schrock. Querin and Schrock each started 10-plus games a year ago.
THE WALLSenior
Micah Conrads has turned into one of the top goalkeepers in not only the region but the country. Conrads comes into this season as the preseason goalkeeper of the year in the RMAC and finished with the third best goals against average in the RMAC.
THE ROSTERThe 2014 roster features a group of 11 freshman that will be able to learn from a group of upperclassmen that has 17 juniors and seniors. Although no freshman are slated to start the opening weekend, many could see action and provide depth in the two matches.
INTERNATIONAL PLAYThis year's roster features three international players. Defender
Stan Schrock is from Okinawa, Japan and junior
Luis Schraidt is from Obregon, Mexico.
Redshirt sophomore
Roy Abergil is from Beercheeva, Israel and will be playing in his first collegiate match this weekend.
COACHINGFirst year coach
Todd Padgett will be coaching his first collegiate match on the men's side. Padgett spent the last two seasons as the head coach at Eastern New Mexico for the women's program.Â
Assistant coach
Cole Sweetser is in his first season as a collegiate coach. Sweetser was one of the best players in RMAC history and was named to the RMAC's all-century team.
2013 RMAC TOURNAMENT CHAMPSThe Mavericks won their first-ever RMAC Tournament last season, defeating the Regis Rangers 2-1 in double overtime.
Oliver Querin booted in the game-winning goal in the second overtime period and was named to the all-tournament team.
RMAC PRESEASON POLLColorado Mesa was picked to finish second in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, and received three first place votes, in the preseason coaches poll. Regis was picked to win the RMAC.
NEXT UPThe Mavericks will travel to Billings, Montana for a pair of matches. They will play the San Francisco State Gators on Friday then they will play the host Montana State - Billings Yellowjackets on Saturday as part of the MSUB Rimrock Classic.
