Box Score 2 DENVER - The Colorado Mesa University volleyball team continued to make a statement early in the season defeating its third top-10 team in two weeks with a 3-1 victory over No. 10 Southwest Minnesota State Saturday (Sept. 13) morning. After losing the first set 24-26, the Mavs rallied to sweep the next three 25-22, 25-22, and 25-21 to give them the victory.
Audrey Steinkirchner led the way with 17 kills and a .406 hit percentage.Â
Melissa Hess and
Abby Ney combined for 23 kills and hit .346 and .304 respectively. Libero Tiffany Peterson recorded a team high 18 digs.
Jordyn Moody had 55 assists for the Mavs.
As a team the Mavericks totaled 10 blocks in the game.
In the second match of the day and final one of the Colorado Premier Challenge, The Mavs came up against seven time defending national champions and current No.1 Concordia-St Paul.
Colorado Mesa got off to a strong start defeating the Golden Bears 25-22 in the first set before falling in the final three sets 25-16, 25-19, and 25-11.
Melissa Hess and
Erin Perez finished the match with team-highs in kills as Hess had 11 and Perez had nine. Tiffany Peterson had 15 digs.
Connie Olson chipped in with seven of her own. Â
Abby Ney and
Jordyn Moody were both named to the All-Tournament Team. This is the second All-Tournament team in as many weeks for both as Moody was named tournament MVP in the Lady Buff Classic and Ney was an all-tournament team member as well.
Audrey Steinkirchner finished the tournament third overall in blocks with 1.38 per set. Tiffany Peterson and
Christian Otzen finished second and third overall in digs per set with 6.0 and 5.2.
Jordyn Moody had 12.12 assists per set to finish fourth overall in the tournament.
Volleyball finished the weekend 2-2 with wins over No. 5 Central Missouri and No.10 Southwest Minnesota State and loses to Regis University and No. 1 Concordia-St. Paul.
The Mavericks are 6-2 overall and open play in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference next weekend at home against Regis, Black Hills State, and Chadron State. They will seek revenge against Regis on Thursday, September 18
th at 7 pm after falling to the Rangers yesterday.
