Joey Danner nearly pitched a no-hitter for Colorado Mesa as the Mavericks won both games of a doubleheader against Colorado School of Mines Saturday (March 15). Mesa won game one 11-7 and game two 3-2.
Danner started game two and pitched six and one third innings before Nate Olinger hit a double to right field which scored Zach Bothwell who got on base by an error to lead off the inning.Â
Dakota Behr picked up his fifth save of the season for the Mavericks in two thirds of an inning of work.Â
The Mavericks would score early and often in game one which featured 18 hits and 20 runs combined between the two teams.
Mines led off the first inning with a run, but Mesa answered with three runs in the bottom thanks to three CMU doubles. Mesa added two more runs the following inning.
Mines took its first lead of the game 7-5 after scoring five runs, including a three-run homer by Charlie Basil, in the top of the fourth inning.Â
Mesa took the lead back in the bottom of the inning after
Austin Kaiser blasted a grand slam. He finished 3-for-3 at the plate with seven RBIs in the game.Â
CMU added two more runs in the sixth to earn an 11-7 win.Â
Mesa used four different pitchers in the contest with
Matt Allen earning his third win of the year.Â
The Mavericks improve to 13-3 and 8-1 in the RMAC and will look to complete the four-game sweep of the Orediggers Sunday (March 16).Â
