Mavericks Split Doubleheader with Cougars

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LAKEWOOD, COLO. – The Colorado Mesa University baseball team opened up Rocky Mountain Athletic Confernce play with a doubleheader split of the Colorado Christian Cougars on Friday at All-Star Park. The Cougars took game one 6-5 with the Mavericks winning game two, 8-0.
 
In the opener, Colorado Mesa stranded 12 runners with nine of those in scoring position in the 6-5 loss. The Mavericks and Cougars each had nine hits but five of the Cougars hits went for extra bases.
 
Sergio Valenzuela led the Mavericks with three hits including a double and two stolen bases.
 
Kevin Mitchell also added two hits.
 
The Mavericks pitching got roughed up early. Nevin Wilson took the loss after going 2.1 innings allowing five runs on four hits, walked two and struck out one.
 
In the nightcap, the Mavericks jumped out early scoring one in the first, five in the second, and two in the third in a 8-0 win. CMU out hit the Cougars 9-5 and benefitted from five Colorado Christian errors.
 
Austin Kaiser finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
 
A trio of freshman each finished the game with a double. Twin brothers Kevan and Trevor Elcock, and Kyle Serrano each had a double which was their first collegiate hit.
 
Joey Danner pitched five shutout innings and allowed just four hits while striking out seven. Daniel Arrellano closed out the game pitching the final two innings and allowed one hit, walked one and struck out one.
 
The Mavericks will close out the series with a doubleheader tomorrow starting at noon from All-Star Park.
