Defense Key in Men's Basketball Win

Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa men's basketball team led from start to finish in a 72-45 win over Western New Mexico Saturday (Feb. 15). The Mavericks improve to 12-11 overall and 10-9 in the league. The weekend sweep was the first for the team in 2014.

Defense was the key for the Mavericks for the second straight night. Mesa held Western scoreless for the first 6:46 of the game with Mustangs scoring only 12 points in the first half.

WNMU shot 37-percent (18-48) from the field, 28-percent (4-14) from deep and 62-percent (5-8) from the line.

Mesa enjoyed a strong shooting night shooting 57-percent (28-49) from the field, 50-percent (8-16) from deep and 88-percent (8-9) from the line.

Ryan Stephan finished with a game-high 23 points, and Carlos Perez came off the bench to finish with 12.

The Mavericks finished with 18 assists with only seven turnovers.

Mesa will host Western State Feb. 22.
