Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa men's basketball team drained a season-high 14 3-pointers and scored a season-high 97 points in a 97-80 win over New Mexico Highlands Friday (Feb. 14) at Brownson Arena. The 14 3-pointers were the most by the Mavericks since they made 14 at UC-Colorado Springs on Jan. 21, 2006.
Landon Vermeer,
Jon Orr and
Jerry Duckworth each made four 3-pointers for CMU.
Mesa shot 60-percent (32-53) for the game but it was the defense that was the difference tonight.
Highlands shot 55-percent (19-34) from the field in the first half and enjoyed a 48-44 lead heading into the lockerroom. The CMU defense responded holding NMHU to 32 points and 29-percent (8-27) from the floor and out-scored Highlands 53-32 over the final 20 minutes.
The Cowboys shot 80-percent (20-25) from the line, but the Maverick's 14 3-pointers were the difference. CMU tallied 23 assists in the contest while Highlands finished with 10.
Five Mavericks finished in double figures led by
Jon Orr's team-high 19.
Ryan Stephan finished with a double-double thanks to 17 points and 14 rebounds.
Landon Vermeer added 17, and
Joe Kiely had 12 to go along with seven assists.
Jerry Duckworth came off the bench and finished with 14.
Mesa (11-11, 9-9) will host Western New Mexico Saturday (Feb. 15).
