Stephan's Lay-in Secures Win

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Ryan Stephan scored the winning lay-up for Colorado Mesa with one second remaining  to defeat Adams State 84-82 in RMAC basketball action Sunday (Dec. 21). The win was the fifth in a row for the Mavericks who improve to 10-2 overall and 5-1 in league play.

Ryan Stephan tied his career-high with 35 points shooting 12-of-18 from the field and 11-17 from the line. The Lakewood, Colo., native grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds for his second double-double of the weekend. He also blocked four shots tying his career-high.

Julian Vasquez scored a career-high 28 points and grabbed a career-high seven rebounds. The Miami, Fla., native shot 9-of-14 from the field, including three 3-pointers, and made all seven free throw attempts.

The game was a back-and-forth battle from the opening tip with the two teams combining for 22 lead changes and 16 ties.

The Grizzlies scored eight straight points to take its largest lead of the game at 4:46 of the first.

The Mavericks cut the lead to four with a minute to go in the half, but Shakir Smith converted a pair of free throws and a lay-up to give ASU a 44-36 lead at the break. Smith finished with a team-high 29 points.

CMU would score seven unanswered points in the second for its largest lead of the game 56-53 with 4:46 remaining. Neither team would lead by more than three points the remainder of the game.

Julian Vasquez made a three to put CMU up one 82-81 with 10 seconds remaining.

The Mavs opted to foul Shakir Smith who made only the second free throw.

Derek Biale inbounded the ball from half-court to Ryan Stephan for the lay-in with one second remaining.

An arrant 3-point attempt by Adams at the buzzer secured the win for Mesa.

The two teams were nearly identical shooting from the floor with CMU shooting 47-percent (28-59) and ASU at 46-percent (29-63).

The Grizzlies held a 37-29 edge in rebounds.
