Mavs Advance with Win

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Melissa Hess finished with a match-high 15 kills and Audrey Steinkirchner added 11 kills to lead the No. 7 Colorado Mesa volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Angelo State in the first round of the NCAA South Central Regional Tournament Friday (Nov. 21).

Hess accounted for seven of the Mavericks 14 kills in the first for a 25-16 CMU win. ASU hit a match-low .143 in the set.

Angelo jumped out to an early nine point lead, 13-4, to start the second. Mesa countered with an 11-5 run to tie the set at 18. With the strength of the home crowd behind them, the Mavs closed the set with a 7-3 run to win 25-21.

The third set the Mavs were the ones to jump out to an early lead at 8-1. Angelo would close the gap to one several times before tying the game at 22. The set would be tied once again at 23, but CMU would win the final two points to take the match.

ASU hit a team-high .205 in the third set, but CMU hit .256 in the final frame.

Hess hit .414 with just three errors, and Steinkirchner hit .280 with 11 kills.

Jordyn Moody recorded the only double-double of the match thanks to 30 assists and 14 digs.

Brianna Sotello and Zoey Hanrahan each had seven kills to lead Angelo. Shelby Wilt finished with a match-high 18 digs.

CMU hit .268 for the match and held ASU to .184. The Mavs also tallied a 43-37 edge in kills.

Colorado Mesa (28-3) will face West Texas Saturday (Nov. 22) at 7:30 pm.
