GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 7 Colorado Mesa volleyball team advanced to the NCAA South Central Regional Championship with a 3-1 win over #24 West Texas Saturday (Nov. 22).
Melissa Hess led a Maverick offense that was nearly unstoppable in the first set. Hess hit 1.000 in the first set tallying six kills on six attempts.
Abby Ney tallied five kills on seven attempts to hit .714. CMU hit a match-high .538 in the set to win 25-19.
The CMU offense cooled off in the second set hitting .192 but the defense stepped up. The Mavericks held the Lady Buffs to a match-low -.212 in the second set. WTAMU tallied four kills and just eight points, the fewest that CMU has allowed in a set this season.
With its season hanging in the balance, West Texas responded in the third set. The Lady Buffs used a six point run to lead 15-9. The lead would hold for most of the set that West Texas won 25-21. The Lady Buffs hit .160 in the set and held the Mavs to a match-low .100.
The fourth set took on the look of a prize fight with the two teams trading blows. The set would feature six lead changes and 17 tie scores with neither team leading by more than three points.

Dave Fleming brought the crowd of over 1,000 fans to their feet in support of the Mavericks with the match tied at 24.

Abby Ney's kill gave the Mavericks the set and the match.
Melissa Hess finished with a match-high 19 kills and hit .447 with just two errors.
Abby Ney hit. 360 and added 13 kills.
Jordyn Moody finished with 44 assists and in the process became CMU's all-time leader in assists with 4,163. Jennie Sutter (1995-98) had the previous record of 4,138.
Tiffany Petersen tallied 23 digs, and
Kricket Adleman chipped in 13.
Jessica Johnson, Lauren Bevan and Sydney Harlan each finished with 10 kills for West Texas.
CMU (28-4) will face Ark.-Fort Smith for the NCAA South Central Regional Championship Saturday (Nov. 23) with the winner advancing to the NCAA Elite Eight in Louisville, Ky.
