Men's Basketball Defeats Dallas Baptist in Opener

AUSTIN, TEXAS – Junior Ryan Stephan scored a career-high 35 points for Colorado Mesa in a 92-89 win over Dallas Baptist Friday (Nov. 14).

Stephan shot 13-of18 from the field, including 3-of-4 from deep, and 6-of-7 from the line. He also grabbed nine rebounds.

Jerry Duckworth came off the bench to score a career-high 20 points. He shot 7-of-12 from the floor including four 3-pointers.

DBU would lead by 10, 21-11, midway through the first half, but CMU would use a 22-1 run to trail by just one, 44-43, at the break.

The second half was a narrow affair. CMU would post its largest lead of the night at 10 points, 88-78, thanks to a lay-up by Jerry Duckworth with 2:09 remaining.

Unfortunately it would be the last field of the game for CMU.

Ryan Stephan and Jerry Duckworth each made two free throws to secure the 92-89 win.

The Mavericks shot 60-percent (33-55) from the field, including 68-percent (17-25) in the second half. CMU shot 65-percent (13-20) from the 3-point line and 77-percent from the free throw line.

The Patriots shot 46-percent (31-68) from the field and 37-percent (13-35) from deep.

DBU finished with a 21-11 edge in points off turnovers. CMU committed 16 turnovers to nine for DBU.

Myles Johnson led five DBU players in double figures with 21 points.

CMU (1-0) will face St. Edward's Saturday (Nov. 15).
