GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Texas A&M-Commerce scored two first half goals and added an insurance goal in the second half to defeat Colorado Mesa 3-1 at Walker Field on Sunday in the annual 'Pink on the Pitch' match.
The Lions got on the board early in the first half with a goal in the 10th minute and then added on another in the 27th minute to take a 2-0 lead.
Colorado Mesa got on the board in the 30th minute. Junior Julia Kranstover scored the first goal of the season for the Mavericks and the first of her career. Kranstover headed in a cross from Leilani Wiernicki and found the left side of the net.
Colorado Mesa trailed 2-1 heading into halftime where an hour and 13 minute lightning delay stalled the game.
A&M-Commerce added an insurance goal in the 54th minute when a long ball bounced and skipped past the defense and the goalkeeper.
The Mavericks fall to 0-2 on the season, while Texas A&M-Commerce improves to 1-1.
Even though the Mavericks came away empty handed on the weekend, Coach Erin Sharpe took away some positives in the two games. "We possessed the ball very well in both games this weekend even with opponents who played more midfielders then we did. I thought we could have used our speed a little more though."
"Our focus this week in practice will be to shoot more and become more disciplined at some of the little things that we have been talking about other then set pieces," Sharpe added.
Friday the Mavericks will take on the Texas-Permian Basin Falcons in Odessa, Texas at 4:00pm then travel over to San Angelo and play the Angelo State Rambelles on Sunday.
