Mavs battle to 0-0 draw in ranked matchup with Mountain Lions

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Playing to a draw against their second ranked opponent this season while remaining undefeated in conference play, the #20 Colorado Mesa University Women's Soccer Team tied with the #14 UCCS Mountain Lions this evening as neither team found the net in a 0-0 decision at Community Hospital Unity Field.

With the draw, the Mavericks continue to remain as the No. 1 team in the conference standings with a one-point lead over Colorado School of Mines. The Mavs are now 11-2-2 overall while sitting at 7-0-2 in the RMAC. The Mountain Lions dropped to third place in the conference standings despite the tie, with them now at 12-2-3 (8-1-2 RMAC).

Coming into the matchup both teams ranked first in opposite categories with the Mavs being the top ranked defense in the RMAC and the Mountain Lions being the top ranked offense.

Colorado Mesa has only given up four goals this season, with zero of them coming in conference play or at home. The Mountain Lions on the other hand, have scored 41 goals on the year.

The top-ranked teams featured a back-and-forth battle for most of the game with the Mavs significantly dominating the second half, despite not scoring.

In the end, Colorado Mesa held the shot advantage at 17-9 with seven of those shots being on goal. The Mavs also had eight corner kicks to the Mountain Lions' three.

Both teams fired an even five shots apiece in the first half with the ball being played much at midfield. It was in the second half that the Mavs dominated with them shooting 12 more times compared to the Mountain Lions' four.

Between the 76th and 79th minutes, Colorado Mesa challenged with five shots to make their push but couldn't convert as strong defensive play kept the ball off target or was saved each time.

Parker Mairs led the team with five shots taken, while the duo of Katie Lozano-Monjaraz and Ellie Duncan each took three.

A total of 12 saves were also made by the goalkeepers with Keely Wieczorek owning five of them to earn her 32nd shutout of her career.

This also extends the Mavs' season shutout record to 12.

Continuing their weekend at home, CMU now hosts another strong opponent in Regis University this Sunday when the two meet at 12 P.M. for CMU Camp/Youth Club Day. Tickets can be purchased in person at the gate or online at cmumavericks.com/tickets.
