The Colorado Mesa University baseball team played their regular season finale on Saturday in a doubleheader against the Colorado Mines Orediggers at Suplizio Field. The Mavericks won 12-0 in game one of the doubleheader then needed a
Jake Kluge three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh and a
Erik Kozel solo shot in the eighth to finish the four game sweep of the Orediggers 4-3 in the nightcap.
In the opener, the Mavericks scored five runs in the first two innings and two runs in the third to cruise to a 12-0 win in the opener. CMU had 14 hits and slugged out four extra base-hits in the win.
First baseman
Kevin Mitchell finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored and four runs driven in. Mitchell hit his team-leading tenth home run of the season and is currently second in the RMAC in homeruns hit.
The story of the opener was the pitching of starter
Joey Danner and a trio of Maverick bullpen pitchers. Danner pitched six shutout innings and allowed just six hits, walked one and struck out two.
Tyler Dunnington,
Matt Allen, and
Dustin Robirtis combined to face one over the minimum in the final three innings while recording three strikeouts.
In the regular season finale, Colorado Mines starter Christian Rooney pitched 5.1 innings of perfect baseball but allowed a walk and a double to lead off the seventh then
Jake Kluge stepped up and hit a game-tying three run homerun to right field field. Then in the bottom of the eighth,
Erik Kozel hit a walk-off solo shot to left field to give CMU the 4-3, extra inning win.
Reliever
Aaron Corwin picked up the win allowing just one hit and striking out two in two innings of work. Corwin improved his record to 4-2 on the season.
The Mavericks finished the regular season with a 41-7 record and a 35-3 record in RMAC matches. Colorado Mesa won 12 of the 13 series they played this season, dropping only the season opening series to UC-San Diego.
The Orediggers fell to 21-25 on the season, 16-20 in RMAC games.
The Mavericks will enter this week's RMAC Tournament as the number one seed and will serve as tournament host. They will face either Colorado Mines or Metro State in the opener, pending results of tomorrow's games. The Mavericks will play at 7:00pm on Wednesday at Suplizio Field.
