The Colorado Mesa University entered Friday nights game with the St. Edward's with a spot in the NCAA South Central Region Semifinals on the line. The Mavericks fell to the Hilltoppers 6-5 in 11 innings at Nolan Ryan Field in Kingsville, Texas.
St. Edward's struck for a run in the top of the third and one in the top of the fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead.
The Mavericks came out and scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 5-2 lead. The inning started off with a solo homerun from first baseman
Kevin Mitchell. The homer was Mitchell's team-leading 12th of the season.
St. Edward's changed pitchers with a pair of runners on in the inning with
Erik Kozel due up. Kozel took new pitcher's first pitch deep to left for a 3-run shot to cap the inning.
That would be all the Maverick's could muster in the game.
Their next biggest threat came in the fifth inning.
Nate Robertson led off with a double and
Kevin Mitchell was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second.
Braden Box came up looking to lay down a sacrifice bunt but reached on the play to load the bases. The next three Maverick hitters all went down looking on 3-2 counts.
St Edward's then scored two runs in the ninth and a single run in the 11th to pick up the win.
Colorado Mesa starter
Nolan Snell pitched well enough to win. Snell went 8.1 innings and allowed five runs (three earned) on five hits, walked three and struck out five. He didnt figure into the decision.
Box finished the game 3-for-4.
The Mavericks play a must-win game at 10:00am (MDT) tomorrow morning against tournament host Texas A&M-Kingsville. If Colorado Mesa were to win, they would play St. Edward's again at 6:00pm (MDT).
