The Colorado Mesa University baseball team hosted their annual 'Little League Family Night/Record Attendance Night' on Friday night at Suplizio Field against the Mountain Division's second place team the Regis Rangers. The Mavericks pounded out five homeruns in a 15-5 win over Regis and pushed their season record to 35-6 on the season and 29-2 in the RMAC. Regis fell to 22-13 and 17-12 in RMAC matches.
The Mavericks, ranked fourth this week in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll and first in the NCAA Regional Poll, fell behind 4-3 after five and a half innings but exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth and five runs in the eighth.
A crowd of 2,873, saw sophomore first baseman
Kevin Mitchell belt two homeruns in the game. Mitchell hit a solo homerun in the second and a three-run shot in the sixth. He finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four runs driven in.
Erik Kozel led off the game with a homerun on the first pitch of the game while teammates
Nate Robertson and
Tamatoa Demello each homered in the Mavericks five-run eighth inning.
Every Maverick starter finished the game with at least one hit.
Senior
Nolan Snell got the start on the mound. Snell finished the game pitching five innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits, walked three and struck out seven. He worked into too many deep counts and threw 105 pitches.
Relief ace
Cody Lahman picked up the win in relief and improved to 6-0 on the season. Lahman pitched two innings and allowed one run on four hits with one strikeout.
The two teams will continue the series tomorrow at 1:00pm with a doubleheader from Suplizio Field.
