Pridham’s Last Second Goal Clinches Win over Queens 8-7

Colorado Mesa men's lacrosse scored the winning goal with 26-seconds remaining in regulation to defeat Queens University 8-7 in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon in Charlotte, NC. The win improved the Mavs to 2-2 on the year while the Royals drop to 2-4 overall.

Griffin Perkiel's ground ball pickup, following a Queens's turnover, led to the winning goal by Austin Pridham off an assist by Perkiel to notch the Mavs' road win.

Queens scored the first two goals of the game before Steve Brandenburg cut the deficit in half with a goal (Josh Russell assist) at the 10:15 mark of the first period. Queens and CMU traded goals in the final six minutes of the first period. Stephen Dunn (Josh Russell assist) pulled the Mavericks to within one goal, 3-2, finding the back of the net with 1:31 remaining.

CMU outscored the Royals 2-1 in the second period to tie the game heading into halftime. James Sharp opened the second period on an unassisted goal to tie the game at 3-3. Queens went back on top 4-3 and Griffin Perkiel tied the game at 4-4 on his first goal of the game with 16-seconds left till intermission.

The Mavericks and Royals played solid defense to open the second half. Queens broke the tie with 6:53 left in the third to take a 5-4 lead. CMU scored the final two goals of the third period with back-to-back goals by Austin Pridham to take a 6-5 advantage.

CMU would go ahead 7-5 on a goal by James Sharp early in the fourth quarter.  Queens answered back with consecutive goals to tie the game at 7-7 with 4:19 remaining in regulation. The Mavericks avoided overtime as Austin Pridham notched a hat trick, scoring the winning goal with 26-seconds left in the game.

CMU goalie Brad Brandenburg helped seal the win with several key saves in the final seconds. Brandenburg finished with 13 saves in the game.

Queens outshot the Mavericks 44-31 and held a 31-24 ground ball advantage.

CMU will travel to Salt Lake City on Saturday, March 16 for an exhibition match with Westminster College.
