Mavs fly past Nighthawks to claim tenth win

Villano, Jensen combine for six goals, 12 points

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Seven different Colorado Mesa University Mavericks scored multiple goals as the Mavericks flew past the visiting Northwest Nazarene University Nighthawks in a blowout 21-3 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men's lacrosse victory on Saturday night here at Community Hospital Unity Field.

The nation's 15th-ranked Mavericks led 11-0 at the half and added eight more goals in the fourth quarter as they picked up their tenth win of the campaign while improving to 10-3 overall and to 7-1 in RMAC play.

The Nighthawks, who made their first ever trip to Colorado this week, fell to 4-8 overall and to 3-6 in the RMAC.

The Mavs dominated from the start and took 57 shots in the game while allowing just 20.  The Mavs also won 21 of 28 faceoffs and had a 52-22 advantage in ground balls while causing 11 of the Nighthawks' 26 turnovers.

Thirteen of the Mavs' goals were assisted.

Barring a Nighthawk upset of Westminster next week, Saturday's game was the final home of the Mavs' season.  The Mavs were 5-1 at home this season and are 26-2 at home over the last five years.

Attackmen Connor Jensen and Ari Villano both finished Saturday's game with three goals to lead the Maverick charge.  Villano also tripled his season assist total to six as he finished with four assists in Saturday's win, finishing with a career-high seven offensive points.  Jensen also added two assists and had five points.

Meanwhile, Eli Bibler, Jack Cooper, Andrew Diaz, Camden Moody and Erich Petersen all scored two goals.  Moody and Cooper also added two assists apiece.  Stefan Dingbaum, Julius Petersen, Dillon Pless, Carson Points and defender Brady Porter also got in to the scoring act.

Defensively, junior goalkeeper Shaden Shields made four saves while pitching a first half shutout before Luke Parrish played throughout the second half while also making four saves.

Porter, who scored his first goal of the season, also had three caused turnovers and five ground balls to match his season and career-highs in both categories.

Zander Adfield started at faceoff and won all nine attempts while scooping up three ground balls.  Dillan Thomas also went 5-for-6 with five ground balls while wing Shawn Ferguson added five ground balls as well.

Grand Junction native Gordie Steidel went the distance in net for the Nighthawks and finished with nine saves.  Jackson Bradshaw also had a solid defensive game for NNU with four caused turnovers and four ground balls.

Hank Riddle scored two of the visitors' three goals after Caleb Mainwaring scored the first breaking a run of nearly 37 scoreless minutes at the 8:15 mark of the third quarter.  The Nighthawks also went more than 70 minutes of game action against the Mavericks without a goal after CMU scored all 11 second half goals in a 17-6 road win over NNU a fortnight ago in Nampa, Idaho.

Six different Mavericks scored in the first quarter of Saturday's win before Moody became the seventh at the 9:25 mark of the second quarter.  Jensen then scored just eight seconds later on a Moody assist to become the first Maverick to get to two goals.

The redshirt junior, who leads the Mavs with 35 offensive points, then finished off his first-half hat trick with 4:57 to go before Villano finished off his third straight and sixth hat trick of his freshman season with the opening goal of the fourth quarter at the 12:17 mark.  Villano then had all four of his assists in a stretch of just 3:42 of mid-quarter action, feeding Cooper, both Petersen brothers and Points.

The Mavs will play neutral site games in Salt Lake City, Utah next week to close out the regular season facing Dominican on Thursday at 4 p.m. and Concordia University Irvine on Saturday at 6 p.m.  Both of those contests will be played at Westminster's Dumke Field.

They will then play in the RMAC Tournament on Apr. 24, which is also likely to be at Dumke Field.
