Colorado Mesa men's lacrosse team scored 7-second half goals, including three in the fourth quarter, erasing a five-goal deficit, before falling to #10 Pfeiffer University, Friday afternoon in Misenheimer, N.C. The Mavericks fall to 1-2 overall and the Falcons move to 5-1 on the year.
Pfeiffer scored first early in the contest (12:44) and CMU's Kade Robinson tied the game at 1-1 at the 10:15 mark. The Falcons closed out the first quarter on an unassisted goal for a 2-1 lead heading in to the second quarter.
Robinson tied the game at 2-2 on a man-up goal before the Falcons went on a three-goal run to take a 5-2 lead. Michael Beimford would end the run with a man-up goal at the 4:11 mark of the second quarter.
Pfeiffer would again reel off three consecutive goals in the final 3:49 of the half to take an 8-3 lead into intermission.
CMU opened the second half on Beimford's second goal of the game to close the gap to 8-4. Following a Pfeiffer goal CMU would string two goals in less than a minute. Steven Brandenburg and Dylan Duresky each scored to pull to within 9-6. The Falcons increased the lead to 10-6 with a goal at the 1:59 mark of the third quarter before Brandenburg found the back of the net with 12-seconds left in the quarter.
Pfeiffer entered the final quarter leading 10-7 and the Mavericks quickly closed that gap to 10-8 off a goal by Josh Russell, 10-seconds into the quarter. Pfeiffer pulled away to 11-8 and once again the Mavs scored back-to-back goals by Duresky and Russell and trailed by just one goal with 6:44 left in regulation.
The Falcon defense held on in the final minutes and scored an insurance goal with 50-seconds left to notch a 12-10 victory.
Five players scored for the Mavericks; Josh Russell, Michael Beimford, Steven Brandenburg, Kade Robinson and Dylan Duresky each tallied two goals each.
Brad Bradenburg recorded 16 saves in the contest, including eight saves in the third quarter.
CMU will continue their road trip on Saturday in Charlotte, N.C. against Queens University.
