Colorado Mesa women's tennis team split a pair of duals in Billings, Montana in opening weekend of RMAC action. CMU swept host Montana State-Billings on Friday, 9-0 before falling to Metro State 5-4 on Saturday morning in Billings.
In the Mavs' sweep over the Yellowjackets the doubles team won two close matches at number two and three doubles to take a 3-0 lead heading into singles action. Kristyn Wykert and Skyler Nelson won 8-6 at number two and Emily Dodson and Katie Metz won a pro-set tiebreak, 9-7 at number three doubles. CMU's number one doubles team of Kaylee Davis and Shannen McNamara posted an 8-3 victory.
CMU clinched the dual handedly sweeping all six singles matches in straight sets.
Saturday morning versus Metro State the Roadrunners took an early 2-1 advantage winning points at number one and three doubles. Skyler Nelson and Kristyn Wykert won 8-2 at number two doubles over Marianne Evangelista and Sam Schall.
CMU and Metro split the six singles matches for the Roadrunner to edge out the victory 5-4 over the Mavericks. Shannen McNamara (#2), Kristyn Wykert (#3) and Nicole Lessley (#6) each posted singles victories for CMU. McNamara beat Evangelista, 6-1, 6-0. Wykert defeated Alicia Holm 6-3, 6-4 and Lessley won 6-1, 6-3 over Sam Schall.
The Roadrunners posted wins at number one singles and number five singles in straight sets. Rachel McLaughlin fell in three sets at number four singles.
CMU will continue league play on the road this weekend on the Front Range. The Mavs will play Colorado Christian, CSU-Pueblo and Western New Mexico. CMU will play a non-league match at Colorado College on Saturday afternoon in Colorado Springs.
