The Colorado Mesa University baseball team concluded its RMAC opening four-game series with the Colorado Christian Cougars on Saturday afternoon at Suplizio Field. The Mavericks swept the day and the series with 16-5 and 11-0 wins and took all four games in the series. CMU is now riding a six game winning streak and improved to 10-4 on the season while Colorado Christian bumpy start continues as they fall to 0-11 on the year.
In game one, the two teams were tied at 2-2 heading to the fifth inning. From the fifth inning on, Colorado Mesa outscored the Cougars 12-3 en route to the 16-5 win. The Mavericks scored 16 runs on 17 hits in the game while the Cougars scored their five runs on seven hits.
On the mound,
Kyle Davis got the start for the first time in nearly two years. Davis picked up the win going five innings allowing two runs on four hits and added five strikeouts. He gave way to
Aaron Corwin,
Matt Allen, and Luke Anderson for the final four innings and they combined for three runs on three hits, two walks and five strikeouts.
Nate Robertson finished the game 3-for-4 with three doubles and
Garrett Carpenter went 3-for-5 with three runs driven in.
The Mavericks stole nine bases in the game with
Austin Kaiser leading the way with three.
In the nightcap, after a tight 2-0 ball game headed to the fifth inning the Mavericks exploded for eight runs in the fifth on their way to a 11-0 win. Colorado Mesa tallied 11 runs on 14 hits while the Cougars could only muster three hits in the game.
Justin Rosales and
Kennedy Kinkade belted homeruns for the Mavericks. Kinkade's was a three-run shot in the fifth then two batters later Rosales hammered a two-run shot. Both homers went over the mini-monster in left field.
Joey Danner once again was brilliant on the mound. Danner went six innings and allowed just one hit, walked one and struck out five to pick up his third win of the season.
Dakota Behr came to pitch a scoreless seventh and added two strikeouts.
The Mavericks will be on the road next weekend in Denver to take on the Regis Rangers. The four-game series will begin Friday with a single nine-inning game starting at 3:00pm
