The Colorado Mesa University baseball team took on the Colorado Christian Cougars in a doubleheader at Suplizio Field. The games were the RMAC openers for both teams. The Mavericks swept the RMAC doubleheader and improved to 8-4 on the season while the Cougars continued their rocky start falling to 0-9 on the year
In game one, the Mavericks committed four costly errors that led to four unearned Cougar runs. But seven Colorado Christian wild pitches helped the Mavericks to a 9-7 win in the series opener. Colorado Mesa scored nine runs on 14 hits and were walked seven times.
Kevin Mitchell came into the game in the top of the second inning and provided instant offense. Mitchell finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs, a RBI, and his first homerun of the season.
Garrett Carpenter also proved to be a big factor in the game once again. Carpenter came into the game in the second inning as well and went 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. He also came in to pitch the ninth and picked up his third save of the season.
Nolan Snell got the start in the opener and went 6.1 innings and allowed seven runs (three earned) on five hits, struck out nine and walked three. Snell moved to 2-1 on the season.
In the nightcap, the two teams had an oldfashioned pitching dual. Maverick righty
Matt Williams and Cougar lefty Travis Mosler took a 0-0 ball game into the seventh and final inning of the game. To that point there had only been four combined hits, two for each side. In the end,
Braden Box's double in the bottom of the seventh scored
Tamatoa Demello, giving the Mavericks a 1-0 win.
Garrett Carpenter struck out the only batter he faced and picked up his first win of the season.
The two teams will conclude their four-game series with a doubleheader at Suplizio Field starting at 12:00pm.
